American Sentinel University’s newest graduates in business, health care and technology disciplines will converge for a commencement ceremony on June 21 at 10 a.m. MDT in the Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall on the University of Denver campus. Leah K. Matthews, Ph.D., a prominent higher education and accreditation visionary and the new executive director of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) and the former vice president for Recognition Services at the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), will deliver the keynote address – ‘Living Boldly.’
“We are proud to recognize the impressive achievements of our graduates on this important day with their families,” says Mary A. Adams, President of American Sentinel University. “This day caps off the hard work, drive, determination, and commitment each student has demonstrated to reach this phase of their challenging journey to attain academic excellence and achieve their goals in the future.”
During the commencement ceremony, the university will confer 80 degrees, 20 of which are at the doctorate level and mark graduates of American Sentinel’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership program established in 2010. American Sentinel currently has more than 3,500 active students and of those, 5 percent are at the doctoral-level and 29 percent are at the masters-level.
Key highlights of this year’s commencement include:
Lori Smith, MBA-HC, Florissant, Colo., is the winner of American Sentinel University’s Mary A. Adams President’s Award honoring a student who exemplifies perseverance in his or her program of study to earn a degree despite numerous obstacles. The President’s Award can be used to pay for tuition costs for three full courses in a chosen field of study.
“It’s an honor to be chosen to receive the Mary A. Adams President’s Award,” says Smith. “I truly appreciate all the people I have the pleasure of interacting with and learning from at American Sentinel who helped me overcome personal obstacles and play such a significant role in helping me earn my MBA Health Care.”
Smith exemplifies servant leadership and ethic. She survived the 2012 Colorado Springs wildfires and throughout that time, Smith couldn’t stop thinking about her pulmonary patients and how to support their needs.
“Lori is a 4.0 in terms of personality, persistence, being a grandmother, humanitarianism, supporting fellow classmates, and of course, grades. She has been consistent throughout her studies and even with multiple distractions – her academic career is without interruption,” says Roxanne Hernandez, student success advisor at American Sentinel University.
Nadia Vaipan, MSN-IPC, Clovis, Calif., is the recipient of this year’s Founder’s Award presented to the student who has the highest grade point average and has also displayed determination and initiative in his or her student life. “I am honored to win this year’s Founder’s Award because it’s a celebration of human resilience as well as the power of encouragement – two characteristics that are evident in my life,” says Vaipan.
In addition, this year’s class of 641 graduates has more than 100 graduates who will receive the Dean’s List Award honoring their academic excellence, leadership and creativity and is presented to those students with the highest GPAs in each academic discipline.
