National Decision Support Company Launches CareSelect

Today, National Decision Support Company (NDSC) announced CareSelect, a new enterprise-wide appropriate use criteria (AUC) and clinical pathway delivery engine integrated with electronic medical records (EMR).

"With over 2 million monthly transactions being generated by more than 100 health systems using our flagship solution ACR Select, we have rapidly become the market's choice to enable the delivery of EMR integrated imaging appropriate use criteria (AUC)," saidMichael Mardini, CEO, NDSC. Guidelines are constantly changing and providers are struggling to manage the delivery of all this new medical knowledge to healthcare providers in a meaningful way. Compliance and quality are critical success factors in a value driven healthcare environment and CareSelect enables the delivery of a wide range of medical knowledge to healthcare providers without the need to reconfigure the EMR each time a guideline changes or needs to be added.

Through the company's work with the American College of Radiology and numerous other imaging criteria sources, NDSC has proven its competence in distilling medical knowledge into actionable criteria. "With CareSelect, we are now applying natural language processing and sophisticated algorithms to the EMR data, enabling high impact advisories across the care continuum," said Mardini. Philips And Allianz Worldwide Partners Launch Connected Health Solution And Services In Germany

Royal Philips and Allianz Worldwide Partners entered a partnership focusing on connected health solutions and services in Germany. The personal health programs* are designed for and tailored to motivate people to make healthy choices in their lifestyle, as active health management is necessary to stem the rising tide of chronic diseases. The health programs leverage Philips’ deep healthcare and consumer expertise are offered across employers as an instrument for occupational health, insurers and consumers.

The healthcare professionals give participants the chance to get more insight into their lifestyle and get personal advice and help change their habits.

Philips To Introduce Rapid Cloud-Based Recovery Service For Healthcare Data In Collaboration With Amazon Web Services

Royal Philips announced the introduction of a secure data recovery service, built in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), that rapidly captures and backs up an entire healthcare organization’s data repository in the cloud.

Specifically tailored to meet the needs of medical data backup, Philips’ new storage service helps healthcare enterprises to further secure patient-critical information against local data loss events, ranging from equipment failure to catastrophic events such as earthquake, fire and flood. With this new storage solution, Philips and AWS continue to strengthen their collaboration to deliver innovative solutions that accelerate the industry’s transformation toward a more connected, value-based, patient-centered care model.

Due to the increased use of medical imaging and the emerging use of digital pathology and genomics in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, healthcare organizations need to store and backup ever-increasing amounts of data. A typical hospital's data repository can easily exceed hundreds of terabytes to petabytes and is often fragmented across the facility, making the transfer of data to remote back-up services, even via high-speed leased-line broadband connections, prohibitively time consuming and expensive. Because of these limitations, many healthcare organizations currently rely on local backup servers directly connected to their internal network that do not guarantee recoverability of the data in the event of a catastrophic failure.

Philips’ new hybrid storage solution combines the company’s expertise in medical data management with AWS’ petabyte-scale data transport service, AWS Import/Export Snowball, to integrate, manage, encrypt and transfer a hospital's entire data repository to the cloud within days, rather than the weeks or months it would take via a wired network. Using the Philips data recovery service, a hospital organization’s IT department simply plugs an AWS Import/Export Snowball device into its network, invokes the appropriate security features, and transfers the required data to the unit.

The device is then physically shipped back and the data transferred to Philips’ HealthSuite digital platform, an open cloud-based platform that allows the creation of the next generation of connected health and clinical IT innovations. Vendor neutral in terms of the type, format and source of the data, the Philips solution manages security, identity and access, auditing, logging and traceability associated with medical data backup.

The goal is to deliver a service that would meet the requirements of the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) by the second half of 2016. In addition to meeting one-time backup requirements, Philips’ HealthSuite data recovery storage service is designed to assist in meeting the ongoing backup needs of healthcare IT departments. One or more of AWS’ 50 terabyte data transport devices will remain on-site to provide a local backup, from which all or parts of the data can be quickly recovered.

Philips HealthSuite digital platform will provide users with the option of adding powerful data analytics, such as population studies, and sophisticated reporting features. It will also offer them the ability to transfer files to or from the cloud via a secure Philips network connection.

Four Leading U.S. Health Systems Sign On To Improve ICU Care With Philips Enterprise Telehealth Programs

Royal Philips announced four leading U.S. health systems have signed multi-year telehealth agreements with Philips to implement its remote intensive care unit (eICU) program.

These new population health management engagements include agreements with Westchester Medical Center Health Network in New York, Baptist Memorial Health Care in Tennessee and BJC HealthCare in Missouri and will further extend Philips’ eICU reach by hundreds of beds and thousands of ICU cases each year. Over the past 15 years, the program has been implemented in more than 50 health systems and 500 hospitals in the U.S. to deliver care throughout 3.5 million ICU patient stays [1].

“As health systems seek to improve patient outcomes while lowering costs, healthcare leaders often first look at the ICU since it can account for 50 percent of mortality and a third of hospital costs,” said Derek Smith, General Manager, Hospital to Home at Philips. “The level of care required by these patients demands continuous monitoring. The explosive growth of telehealth in recent years proves the need for these unique delivery models that provide the best care, while addressing the demand to reduce costs.”

The conditions of ICU patients can deteriorate rapidly. The eICU program’s telehealth team of remote specialists continuously monitor patients to support the bedside team and proactively identify issues and intervene before they become significant problems. The eICU telehealth team has access to Philips advanced analytics that can process large amounts of data from more than 150 patients, along with data visualization tools that allow clinicians to focus on those patients who need their attention first.

“Ensuring the best care possible for patients takes on a new meaning when their condition is critical,” said Corey Scurlock, M.D., Medical Director for the Westchester Medical Center Health Network’s eHealth Center. “While our on-site staff is exceptionally capable, the additional support that a specialized telehealth program like Philips offers empowers us to oversee a larger population and have a deeper insight into those at the greatest risk of needing intervention immediately.”

Ultimately, this type of proactive care can help improve clinical and financial outcomes. Compared to patients receiving usual ICU care, patients who received ICU care from a hospital with an eICU program were 26% more likely to survive and discharged from the ICU 20% faster [2]. Additionally, on average, tele-ICUs result in USD 5,000 in cost savings per patient [3], and USD 1.2 million in savings due to reduced transfers [4].

As the population in the U.S. ages, demand for critical care is rising at a time when the industry is facing a chronic shortage of intensivists. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, the intensivist shortage will become increasingly challenging, with supply meeting only 22 percent of the demand for services by 2020 [5]. Consequently, ICU patients are often cared for by non-specialists.

Telehealth enables intensivists to cover wider geographies and provide access to care to more people, while patients stay in their local hospitals. This helps them avoid both transportation costs and the stress of transferring to other critical care centers, while still giving them access to the specialized care they need.

The Philips eICU program is part of a suite of enterprise telehealth solutions delivered by Philips Hospital to Home to help improve outcomes, provide better value and expand access to care. Programs help address multiple cohorts within a population ranging from highest cost patients with intensive ambulatory care and acute needs, to discharge transition and chronic patient management, to prevention and wellness for the general population. These programs use a proactive care model to clinically transform the delivery of care to address growing clinician shortages while improving patient outcomes.

Philips enters new agreement on patient monitoring systems and software with the Stockholm County Council

Royal Philips announced that it has signed a new agreement with the Stockholm County Council on patient monitoring systems and software for the Karolinska University Hospital, which comprises the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital and the Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge.

As part of the agreement, Philips will deliver patient monitoring systems and clinical decision support applications that can be used to monitor a patient’s vital signs including the respiratory rate, pulse, blood pressure and temperature.

“The deterioration of a patient’s condition is often preceded by physiological changes that can be detected up to 24 hours before a serious event,” said Håkan Skytt, Customer Manager at Philips Sweden. “Changes in a patient’s vital signs are frequently an indication that the patient’s condition is worsening and that there is an increased risk of complications. Constant monitoring of the vital signs will allow any subtle changes to be detected and addressed in a timely manner.”

The new agreement further includes an innovation collaboration to jointly develop next-generation solutions for patient-centric care.

“For Philips, strategic partnerships with leading healthcare providers such as Karolinka University Hospital are an important and effective way to create innovative health technologies that can both streamline and enhance the delivery of care,” said Johan Folkunger, General Manager of Philips’ Health Systems businesses in Sweden.

Philips’ patient monitoring systems can measure and collect a patient’s vital signs and allow remote monitoring from a central workstation as well as bedside monitoring at an individual patient’s bedside. The data can be readily accessed and used by the relevant staff for the adequate delivery of care.

The collected data is stored centrally at the Karolinska University Hospital and can be used for the delivery of care, quality enhancement and clinical research. The New Karolinska Solna University Hospital is currently being constructed and will be admitting the first patients in the fourth quarter of 2016. The majority of the construction work is expected to be finalized in the course of 2017 and the hospital is planned to be fully operational in 2018. Karolinska University Hospital is one of the world’s leading academic hospitals, and its new site will reinforce its position in the field of highly specialized medical care.

The New Karolinska Solna University Hospital will implement a patient-centric approach to healthcare and deploy care pathways in which patient care, clinical research and training have been integrated. This is fully in line with Philips’ mission to develop meaningful innovations that make a difference for consumers, patients and healthcare providers.


Nuffield Health Expands Patient Services With Five MR Systems From Siemens Healthcare

Not-for-profit healthcare provider, Nuffield Health, has as part of a wider investment programme, invested in five MR's and one CT system from Siemens Healthcare to provide its patients with a more comfortable imaging experience and an expanded service offering. The five MAGNETOM® Aera 1.5T systems and one SOMATOM® Definition Edge across various sites are providing an enhanced patient experience due to the systems' open bore design. The technology is also paving the way for the addition of a walk-in service and an MR breast screening service in the future.

The technology has been or will shortly be installed across Nuffield Health sites in Exeter, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Leeds and York. Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital has experienced an increase in outpatient referrals and can now accommodate bariatric patients which was not previously possible. The MAGNETOM Aera is located in its own dedicated suite within Radiology, which provides a comfortable environment for patients throughout the week.

First Patient Treated With LC Bead LUMI™

London, UK and Amsterdam, the Netherlands - BTG plc (LSE: BTG), a global specialist healthcare company, and Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHIA), a global leader in image-guided therapy, announced today a significant milestone in their collaboration with the treatment of the first liver cancer patient with LC Bead LUMI™ in conjunction with Philips live image guidance, targeting a hypervascular tumor with the goal to block blood flow to achieve tumor necrosis.

Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the world [1], and one of the most challenging to treat. Each year, more than 700,000 patients worldwide are diagnosed with liver cancer [2]. Interventional embolization is an option for some patients with tumors that cannot be removed by surgery. The first patient treated signals the next stage in commercializing next generation embolic beads, which can be visualized during interventional procedures, allowing enhanced visualization to evaluate completeness of tumor treatment.

As a result of the collaboration between BTG and Philips, for the first time doctors will be able to see rather than assume the location of the LC Bead LUMI™, in order to deliver their treatment with more confidence when treating liver cancer.

Henry Ford Health System Is 8th U.S. Health System In Six Months’ Time To Adopt Philips’ Predictive Analytics Solution As Health Systems Seek To Identify At-Risk Elderly Patients At Home

Royal Philips announced the growing adoption of its predictive analytics engine CareSage with health organizations across the U.S. such as Henry Ford Health System, a leading comprehensive, integrated U.S. health system, with whom the company recently signed an agreement. Using Philips’ Lifeline technology, CareSage enables hospitals and health systems to manage their patient populations by proactively identifying at-risk patients most likely to need an emergency transport in the next 30 days, helping prevent avoidable hospitalizations.

Since CareSage’s commercial availability in the second half of last year, eight U.S. health systems have signed on to support an initial population of 6,500 elderly patients per month. Next to Henry Ford Health System (Michigan), these systems include Roper St. Francis (South Carolina), Peninsula Regional Medical Center (Maryland), Carondelet Home Care (Kansas/Missouri), Delmar Gardens Home Care (Missouri) and Presence Care @ Home (Illinois).

CareSage provides analysis of real-time and historical data from health care providers and Philips Lifeline’s AutoAlert technology to focus on senior patients when they return home after a hospital visit or home health care period. The predictive analytics tool identifies patients most likely to need to be transported to a hospital within the next 30 days so clinicians can provide timely intervention. Part of Philips’ continued effort to support this population, CareSage is being built on Philips’ cloud-based HealthSuite digital platform, a multivendor, open and scalable Platform-as-a-Service that supports the development of connected health solutions.

Seniors use more health care per capita than any other group [1], and this will only increase as the population grows – currently 5percent of patients account for 50 percent of Medicare health care spending [2]. By 2060, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is expected to be 98 million [3], and poor care transitions are a top cause of unnecessary readmissions, emergency department visits and hospitalizations of seniors. As the industry evolves toward a value-based care model, health systems are looking to use predictive analytics to extend care to the home while reducing costs and readmissions and providing better patient outcomes for this high cost group.

Siemens Healthcare has launched the new versatile and cost-effective Biograph Horizon™ PET/CT system, which offers premium performance at an attractive total cost of ownership. The system provides clinicians with the capabilities required to serve a broad range of patients and expand into new service areas. It enables the use of all commercially available PET tracers, giving users the ability to address more indications in the specialist fields of oncology, neurology and cardiology.

The Biograph Horizon utilises 4mm LSO crystals to provide rapid scintillation with a high-light output, providing excellent image quality using the lowest achievable dose to aid clinicians with visualising small lesions. This in turn ensures a timely diagnosis which contributes to effective care pathways, helping to reduce patient side effects related to ineffective therapies. The system also offers built-in capabilities that automate routine tasks to increase productivity and streamline workflows. Siemens Healthcare Supports Diabetes Testing In The Community

During Self Care Week, Bradford Beating Diabetes and Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics formed a partnership to provide diabetes testing in the community for the residents of Bradford. The initiative helped identify those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes to ensure the most appropriate advice, care and support to prevent or delay the onset of the condition. Four DCA Vantage® Analysers were used to issue over 90 HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) tests to participants attending a walk-in service at Girlington Community Centre in Bradford.

During the event, further testing provided by a group of Bradford GP practices was also available to local residents including a dummy aortic aneurysm scanner. Vitalographs were also provided to see if patients needed referral for a spirometry test for COPD, physical pulses were used for referral for an ECG and blood pressure checks to test for hypertension.

Since 2013, more than 12,000 people who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes have taken part in the Bradford Beating Diabetes programme, 6000 of whom have received lifestyle advice from their GP or healthcare team. The initiative has also helped those who already have diabetes to manage their condition and prevent serious complications in the future. NHS Bradford City CCG, which created the programme, has been recognised for its innovation and named as one of seven demonstrator sites for the National NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.

"Over 1,000 new patients with type 2 diabetes have been identified since the very start of the Bradford Beating Diabetes campaign. Although the prevalence of diabetes in Bradford is around 10%, higher than the UK average, we believe the community demographic means it should be a lot higher," states Anne-Marie Mitchell, Practice Manager at Picton Medical Centre. "This year we wanted to bring testing into the community and Siemens has been pivotal in making this a reality. By providing the analysers, training staff on their use and supporting the team we have been able to give local people who are worried about diabetes near-instant results."

Luke Williams, who took part in a diabetes test, states, "I decided to get a diabetes test out of curiosity and as it was quick and easy. Prior to the test I was not worried, but my results were unexpectedly high which has been a wakeup call. The team was able to give me instant results and point out areas for improvement such as healthy eating tips and exercise advice. As I was not previously worried about diabetes it would not be something I would request a test for at my GP surgery, therefore the accessible walk-in service has been invaluable."  

The DCA Vantage Analysers from Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics use a simple finger prick test to measure the average blood glucose level over 3 months and provide results in six minutes. Following the results, individuals were categorised as either low, moderate or high risk, or diabetic. Residents were also invited to benefit from a range of other tests including blood pressure testing for hypertension, spirometry to check for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in addition to BMI testing. A range of support services were also in situ to provide attendees with lifestyle advice and support.

During the event a number of high-risk individuals that were previously unaware they were in this category were identified. By identifying those at risk, early intervention can be implemented by practices and ultimately change people's lives by providing advice to support a healthy lifestyle."
