A comprehensive four-day training course run by experts from Royal Brompton Hospital and supported by the National Heart and Lung Institute and Siemens Healthcare has been successfully completed by Cardiac Radiologists and Imaging Cardiologists from the UK, Denmark and India.
It was designed to provide advanced, practical experience and build knowledge of Cardiovascular CT technology and procedures. The training course was supported by the National Heart and Lung Institute and held at Siemens’ world-class Academy Training and Education Centre at its headquarters in Frimley, Surrey. The delegates were provided with small group teaching, advice and expert tuition on the assessment of cardiac anatomy, coronary artery assessment and functional cardiovascular assessment.
“The clinicians that attended the course all benefitted from the use of a dedicated syngo® workstation that enabled each of them to evaluate 150 cardiac cases over the four-day period, providing a comprehensive overview of the subject matter and any possible eventualities that may arise,” states Russell Lodge, CT Business Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “By using real cases to discuss techniques, delegates were able to comprehensively evaluate a range of approaches with the clinical lead. The course should equip all attendees with increased CT knowledge as they return to their respective departments.”
“This year’s Advanced Cardiovascular CT course provided clinicians with the opportunity to develop their skills and build their confidence with regards to cardiovascular CT,” states Dr Ed Nicol, Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and Course Director. “The comprehensive course ensured that all delegates benefited from being able to learn in great detail about cardiology and the detection of cardiovascular disease with CT.”
Learning areas covered during the training included: scanner types and protocols; calcium scoring and coronary angiography; stent and graft assessment; functional assessment with cardiovascular CT; valvular heart disease; aortic pathology including TAVI assessment; extra-cardiac findings and congenital heart disease and electrophysiology assessments.
“The course was structured using short lectures that supported the real strength of hands-on validated case learning with each case carefully chosen to deliver the entirety of the curriculum,” states Dr. Richard Cooper, Consultant Radiologist and Head of the Northern School of Radiology. “Technical support was provided from Siemens Healthcare and also from expert consultant trainers, luminaries in their field. The Advanced Cardiovascular CT course was an exemplar of how modern image interpretation courses should be designed and run.”

The combination of dedicated teaching, small group discussion and analysis of over 150 cases ensured that the course covered the breadth of the BSCI/SCCT curricula that is used for accreditation.”
