Ascom Introduces Waveform Alerts On Smartphones And Tablets

Ascom Wireless Solutions introduces the next phase in mission-critical communication for Healthcare by delivering patient monitor waveform1 images from GE Patient Monitors to smart devices. The Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices is a communication application enabling sophisticated, two-way alerts and messaging for healthcare clinicians on Apple iOS and Android phones and tablets.

The addition of waveform image delivery significantly improves the tools now available to healthcare clinicians on-the-go. Now clinicians have more choices and can get waveforms on their Ascom VoWiFi handsets, IP-DECT handsets as well as smartphones and tablets.2 The old adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, really rings true when nurses view a critical event on their smart device. Enabling patient waveform image viewing allows care providers to more easily determine how quickly they need to respond to the bedside. Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices not only delivers waveform images through its application, but also allows clinicians to scroll the image forward and backwards, and zoom in on the image as well.

Tom McKearney, Director Unite Product Line at Ascom Wireless Solutions, states “Hospitals are always searching for genuine tools to improve patient care and to respond quicker to different types of events. Allowing clinicians to receive waveform images on smart devices is a major step in delivering on both of these goals.”

Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices allows clinicians the ability to extend healthcare beyond the walls of a hospital. Patient information and alerts are delivered to a smart device utilizing robust, standards-based security and message encryption to ensure patient confidentiality. All data is stored centrally, so even if a device is lost, your data remains safe.

Additionally, the application supports failover via SMS/SMTP to the same device or another device in the event carrier data network coverage is not available. The enormous number of healthcare related applications available, coupled with the need for integration to healthcare systems, is driving the extraordinary growth of smart devices in healthcare. The Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices supports those healthcare professionals who need an integrated approach to using a smartphone or tablet at work.2

Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices may also be deployed in conjunction with an Ascom VoWiFi or IP-DECT system to ensure both on-site and off-site access to critical events and information. Message alert behavior between both the Ascom on-site wireless devices and smart devices is virtually the same, making it easy to have a combination of different devices and adapt to either device as needed. Ascom Wireless Solutions is the only provider who can deliver intelligent integration, advanced alarm/messaging services, system management and on-site wireless handsets in one powerful package.

1 The waveforms are being sent by the Ascom Mobile Monitoring Gateway (MMG)

2 All technical specifications for what devices will work are included in the “Ascom Unite Axess for Smart Devices Product Sheet”

Expect big things for telemedicine policy this year. That was the message from speakers the ATA Federal Telemedicine Policy Summit, held last week in Washington, DC. The event, organized by the American Telemedicine Association, revealed growing federal support for telemedicine services and technologies.

It featured an impressive line-up of speakers, including members of Congress, officials from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Federal Communications Commission and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as an array of leading patient and provider advocates.

Over 250 attendees from across the spectrum of healthcare and technology participated in the event. “The Summit set a new standard, both in terms of the high profile of the speakers, as well as overall attendance,” said Ed Brown, MD, President of the American Telemedicine Association. “I think this reflects a growing realization—both within government and outside the beltway—that telemedicine is a vital component for quality, accessible and cost-effective healthcare.” For the first time, leaders from both sides of the aisle, agency officials and representatives from consumer and industry groups expressed a strong consensus that the federal government should do more to support the deployment of telemedicine and mHealth.

Despite their differing political ideologies and interests, there was a clear consensus amongst Summit speakers about this opinion as well as shared strategies for achieving their common objective. Complete program information from the ATA Federal Telemedicine Policy Summit is available at: http://www.americantelemed.org/summit. “This is a real paradigm shift for telemedicine,” said Jonathan Linkous, CEO of the American Telemedicine Association. “ATA is no longer the lone voice advocating for telemedicine; now we’re coordinating public and private stakeholders and leading a broad coalition for the improvement of healthcare through telemedicine. This development bids well, both for our industry and, more importantly, for patients across America who will benefit from telemedicine technologies.”

The American Telemedicine Association is the leading international resource and advocate promoting the use of advanced remote medical technologies. Philips announces FDA clearance for its AlluraClarity interventional X-ray system

Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced that it has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its innovative AlluraClarity live image guidance system in the US. In close collaboration with leading clinicians in the field of minimally-invasive medicine, Philips has been driving innovation in interventional imaging for more than 50 years, helping to guide procedures such as the catheter-based treatment of obstructed coronary arteries, brain aneurysms, heart rhythm disorders and defective heart valves (heart valve replacement).

Philips’ AlluraClarity system with its powerful ClarityIQ technology provides high quality imaging for a comprehensive range of clinical procedures, achieving excellent visibility at low X-ray dose levels for patients of all sizes. To reflect the cost pressures that modern hospitals and health systems face, ClarityIQ technology will also be available as an upgrade for the majority of Philips’ installed base of monoplane and biplane interventional X-ray systems. “All patients treated via X-ray guided interventions benefit from the advantage of low radiation exposure, but it is especially important when you are treating patients who have to undergo lengthy and complex procedures,” said Dr. Marco van Strijen, interventional radiologist at the St. Antonius Hospital Utrecht/Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. “We have been using Philips’ AlluraClarity system for more than a year now and have really grown to appreciate the low dose settings. This technology is making a difference where it really matters."

“The transition from highly invasive surgical procedures to minimally-invasive image-guided therapies, with all their intrinsic patient benefits, is a transformation in the delivery of healthcare that is rapidly accelerating around the globe,” said Gene Saragnese, CEO Imaging Systems at Philips Healthcare. “It is an area where technology innovation and procedure innovation go hand in hand. AlluraClarity is a perfect example of how Philips’ close collaboration with clinical partners has combined these two areas of innovation to facilitate more advanced treatment while at the same time managing radiation dose.”

AlluraClarity’s low X-ray dose settings are a radical new development in the healthcare industry that will help clinicians to better manage their patients’ and their own exposure to X-ray radiation. This achievement is the result of a multi-year development program that formed part of Philips’ continuous investment in healthcare R&D, totaling EUR 803 million in 2012.

Philips’ AlluraClarity was commercially introduced outside the US in mid-2012, and since then more than 200 systems have been ordered. With this important milestone of FDA clearance, the system can now be marketed in the world’s largest healthcare market.
